What Are Dental Inlays and Onlays?

Dental inlays and onlays are indirect restorations, meaning they're made outside your mouth in a dental laboratory before being bonded permanently to your tooth. They sit somewhere between a standard filling and a full dental crown.

Dental Inlay: Fits inside the cusps (the raised points) on the chewing surface of your tooth. Best for decay or damage that's contained within those grooves.

Dental Onlay: Covers one or more cusps and extends further across the tooth surface. Sometimes called a "partial crown" because it covers more area than an inlay but less than a full crown.

Both types are designed to strengthen weakened tooth structure, seal out bacteria, and restore your ability to chew properly. Patients across Appin, Wilton, Picton, and the wider Wollondilly area choose inlays and onlays when they want a conservative repair that keeps as many healthy teeth as possible.

Inlay and Onlay Solutions We Offer

At Appin Dental Surgery, we work with three main materials for dental inlays and onlays. Each has different strengths, and we'll help you choose the right one during your consultation.

Porcelain/Ceramic Inlays and Onlays

Porcelain inlays and onlays are the most popular choice for teeth that show when you smile. We colour-match them to your natural teeth, so they're practically invisible once bonded. Ceramic restorations are stain-resistant and hold up well to daily chewing forces. If aesthetics matter to you, this is usually the way to go.

Composite Resin Inlays and Onlays

Composite inlays and onlays are tooth-coloured and bond directly to your tooth structure. They are a solid middle-ground option, often a bit more affordable than porcelain while still looking natural. Composite can be a good fit for smaller restorations where you want a conservative approach.

Gold Inlays and Onlays

Gold is the longest-lasting material for dental restorations, period. It wears at a rate similar to natural tooth enamel, which makes it gentle on opposing teeth. Gold inlays and onlays are typically placed on back molars where biting forces are highest and appearance isn't the main concern.

Why Choose Inlays and Onlays Over Other Restorations?

Inlays and Onlays provide several benefits compared to other restorative treatments for damaged or decayed teeth. Let's take a look at some of their key advantages:

Preserves More of Your Natural Tooth

Unlike a full crown, an inlay or onlay only requires removing the damaged portion. More healthy tooth structure stays intact.

Stronger Than Regular Fillings

Because they're fabricated in a lab (not packed directly into your tooth), inlays and onlays are considerably more durable. They can increase tooth strength by up to 75% compared to large composite fillings.

Better Seal Against Decay

The lab-fabricated fit is precise, which means tighter margins and less chance of bacteria sneaking underneath the restoration over time.

Long-Lasting Results

With good oral hygiene and regular check-ups at Appin Dental Surgery, dental inlays and onlays typically last 10 to 30 years.

Natural Appearance

Porcelain and composite options match your tooth colour, so nobody will know you've had work done.

Strengthens Weakened Teeth

Rather than just filling a hole, inlays and onlays actually reinforce the remaining tooth structure, reducing the risk of further cracks or fractures.

Are Inlays or Onlays Right for You?

The best way to find out is to come in for an assessment. Our dentists at Appin Dental Surgery will examine your tooth, take X-rays if needed, and talk you through all your options. That said, inlays and onlays are commonly recommended for:

Moderate Decay or Damage

The cavity or crack is too large for a direct filling to hold up, but a full crown would mean removing too much healthy tooth.

Cracked or Fractured Teeth

If the damage is contained to the chewing surface or involves one or two cusps, an onlay provides targeted protection without covering the entire tooth.

Replacing Old, Large Fillings

Ageing amalgam fillings often weaken the surrounding tooth. Swapping them for a custom inlay or onlay gives you a stronger, better-looking result.

Your Inlay & Onlay Journey: A Precise Process at Appin Dental Surgery

Restoring your tooth with an inlay or onlay at our Appin practice typically involves two appointments. Here's exactly what happens at each stage:

Invisalign Aligners (4)_edited.jpg
  • During your first visit, we will thoroughly examine the affected tooth and take X-rays to assess exactly how much decay or damage is present. We will discuss whether a dental inlay or onlay is the best option for your situation, or if another restoration like a filling or crown makes more sense. Once we have agreed on the treatment plan, we numb the area with local anaesthetic so you are completely comfortable. Then we carefully remove all decay, old filling material, or damaged tooth structure.

  • Once the tooth is prepared, we take highly accurate impressions (moulds) of your tooth and the surrounding teeth. These impressions capture every detail of your tooth's shape, bite alignment, and the way your upper and lower teeth come together. We send them to a trusted Australian dental laboratory where skilled technicians fabricate your custom inlay or onlay. Before you leave, we place a temporary filling to protect your prepared tooth until your next appointment. This stage usually takes about one to two weeks while the lab crafts your restoration.

  • At your second appointment, we remove the temporary filling and clean the prepared tooth thoroughly. Your custom-made inlay or onlay is tried in to check the fit, how it sits against neighbouring teeth, and how your bite comes together. We'll also check the colour match under natural light to make sure it looks right. Once everything is confirmed, we bond the restoration permanently to your tooth using a strong dental adhesive.

  • After bonding, we make any fine adjustments to your bite so it feels natural and comfortable when you chew. We polish the restoration so it's smooth against your tongue and neighbouring teeth. Before you leave, our team will walk you through aftercare instructions. We will also schedule your next routine check-up so we can monitor how your new inlay or onlay is settling in.

How to Look After Your New Inlay and Onlay?

Good news: caring for an inlay or onlay is pretty much the same as caring for your natural teeth.

Brush twice a day and floss daily

Pay extra attention around the edges where the restoration meets your natural tooth. That's where plaque likes to build up.

Avoid chewing hard objects

Make sure to avoid hard objects directly on the restored tooth, especially right after placement. Skip the ice cubes, hard lollies, and un-popped popcorn kernels.

Keep up with your regular dental check-ups

Visit us at Appin Dental Surgery every 6 months so we can check your inlay or onlay is holding up and catch any issues early.

Frequently Asked Questions about Inlays and Onlays

  • A filling is placed directly into your tooth in a single visit for smaller cavities. Inlays and onlays are for larger areas of damage that a filling can't handle properly, but where a full crown isn't needed yet. An inlay sits within the cusps on the chewing surface. An onlay extends over one or more cusps, covering a bigger area.

  • With proper care, regular dental check-ups, and good oral hygiene, inlays and onlays can last anywhere from 10 to 30 years. The lifespan depends on the material, your bite, and how well you maintain your teeth at home.

  • For larger areas of damage, yes. Lab-made inlays and onlays are stronger, fit more precisely, and last longer than direct composite fillings. For small cavities, a standard filling is still the best and most cost-effective option.

  • In Australia, dental inlays and onlays generally range from $400 to $1,800+ per tooth, depending on the material and size of the restoration. At Appin Dental Surgery, we provide a full quote after your consultation so you know the exact cost before treatment starts.

  • No. We use local anaesthetic to numb the area, so you won't feel anything during the preparation or bonding. Some mild sensitivity after the anaesthetic wears off is normal, but it typically passes within a day or two.

  • Yes, most private health funds with major dental or extras cover will partially cover inlays and onlays. We are a preferred provider for nib and Medibank, and we accept all major Australian health funds.

  • An onlay covers one or more cusps of your tooth but leaves the rest of the natural tooth intact. A crown covers the entire visible portion of the tooth. Onlays are a more conservative option, preserving more healthy tooth structure.

  • Absolutely. Porcelain and composite resin inlays and onlays are colour-matched to your existing teeth, so they blend right in. Most people won't be able to tell you've had any dental work done.

Frequently Asked Questions about Dental Crowns

  • Dental crown cost in Australia typically ranges from $1,100 to $2,500 per crown, depending on the material. At Appin Dental Surgery, porcelain dental crowns start from approximately $1,200 and zirconia crowns from $1,300.

  • With good oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups, most dental crowns last between 10 and 15 years. Many patients keep theirs for 20+ years.

  • No. The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia, so you won't feel pain during the appointment. Some mild sensitivity for a few days afterward is normal and settles on its own.

  • A dental crown covers the entire tooth (all surfaces), while a veneer covers only the front face. Crowns are for teeth that need structural repair: cracks, large cavities, root-canal-treated teeth. Veneers are primarily cosmetic, used for colour correction or reshaping front teeth.

  • Typically two appointments over one to two weeks. The first visit (45-60 minutes) involves preparing the tooth, taking impressions, and placing a temporary crown. The second visit (around 30 minutes) is for fitting and cementing the permanent dental crown.

  • It's uncommon, but it can happen if the underlying tooth has very little structure remaining or the cement weakens over time.

  • Yes. Modern porcelain and zirconia dental crowns are precisely colour-matched and shaped to blend with your surrounding teeth. Our crowns are handcrafted by Australian dental technicians who specialise in lifelike restorations. Most people won't know which tooth has a crown.

  • A tooth that needs a crown is already compromised. Without protection, the tooth risks further cracking, deeper decay, or fracture. Worst case, you lose the tooth and need a dental implant or bridge, both of which cost significantly more.
