Dentures in Appin: Custom-Fit Solutions for Missing Teeth
Comfortable, Unique solutions designed to restore your Smile
Missing teeth affect more than your smile. They change the way you eat, how clearly you speak, and how your face looks over time. If you've been putting up with gaps, loose teeth, or ill-fitting old dentures, we can help.
At Appin Dental Surgery, our team works alongside dental prosthetist Francois Benier-Alleaume (17+ years clinical experience) to craft dentures that actually fit, look natural, and let you get back to eating and talking without thinking twice.

What are Dentures?
Dentures are custom-made removable appliances that replace missing teeth. They are built from prosthetic teeth set into a gum-coloured acrylic or chrome cobalt base, shaped to sit over your gums and match the contours of your mouth.
Good dentures do more than fill the gaps. They restore your ability to chew a full range of foods, support clearer speech, and prevent the sunken facial appearance that often develops after tooth loss. Your jawbone and surrounding muscles lose their support when teeth are missing. Dentures give that structure back.

Full (Complete) Dentures
These replace all teeth in the upper jaw, lower jaw, or both. Full dentures sit directly on the gums and rely on suction (particularly upper dentures, which seal against the palate) and sometimes denture adhesive for retention. They are made from acrylic resin with prosthetic teeth carefully shaped and shaded to look natural. Full dentures restore your complete smile, your chewing ability, and your facial profile.

Partial Dentures
Partial dentures fill the gaps when some natural teeth remain. They use a framework of metal clasps (chrome cobalt) or precision attachments to anchor onto your existing teeth. This stops the denture from shifting and prevents your remaining teeth from drifting into the empty spaces over time. Chrome cobalt partial dentures are thinner, stronger, and more comfortable than full acrylic partials, though they cost more. Acrylic partials are a more affordable option, especially as a temporary or transitional solution.

Implant-Retained (Overdentures)
If you are tired of a denture that slips, clicks, or won't stay put, implant-retained dentures are worth considering. Two to four dental implants are placed into the jawbone, and the denture snaps securely onto them. You get the stability of fixed teeth with the convenience of a removable appliance you can take out for cleaning.

Immediate Dentures
Placed on the same day your teeth are extracted, so you're never left without teeth during the healing period. Your gums will change shape as they heal over the following months, so immediate dentures typically need relining or replacement with a permanent set once healing is complete (usually 3 to 6 months).

Flexible Dentures
Made from a softer, bendable thermoplastic material (like Valplast) instead of rigid acrylic. They're lighter, more comfortable against the gums, and the clasps are tooth-coloured or clear rather than metal, so they're much less noticeable. Some patients who've struggled with sore spots from rigid acrylic dentures find flexible ones far more comfortable.
Types of Dentures We Offer in Appin
We offer five types of dentures at our Appin clinic. Which one suits you depends on how many teeth you're missing, your jawbone health, your budget, and your lifestyle. Here's a clear breakdown
Who Should Consider Dentures?
You might be a good candidate for dentures if you're dealing with any of these situations:
You have lost most or all of your teeth in one or both jaws due to decay, gum disease, or injury.
Everyday things like chewing food or speaking clearly have become difficult.
You've noticed your face looks "sunken" or aged since losing teeth.
Your remaining teeth are failing and need to be extracted.
You want a non-surgical, removable tooth replacement option.
Your current dentures are old, loose, or uncomfortable and need replacing.
The best way to know for sure is to come in for a consultation. We will examine your gums, check your jawbone health (with X-rays or 3D scans if needed), and talk through your options honestly.

The Benefits of Dentures: More Than Just a New Smile
Dentures are more than just a cosmetic treatment, they combine necessary functions such as chewing, speaking and facial support. At Appin Dental Surgery, we offer custom-made dentures designed to look natural, fit comfortably, and help you regain confidence in your daily life.
Improved Chewing and Eating Ability
Dentures help restore proper biting and chewing function, making it easier to enjoy a wide range of foods again. This supports better nutrition and overall health by allowing you to eat a more balanced diet.
Clearer Speech
Missing teeth can affect the way you pronounce certain words. Dentures support your lips and tongue, helping you speak more clearly and communicate with confidence.
Restored Facial Structure and Appearance
Tooth loss can lead to facial sagging and a sunken look. Dentures provide essential support to facial muscles, helping maintain natural facial shape and a more youthful appearance.
Increased Confidence and Self-Esteem
A complete smile can significantly improve how you feel in social and professional situations. Dentures help you smile, talk, and interact with others without hesitation.
Comfortable, Custom Fit
Modern dentures are designed to fit your mouth precisely, ensuring better comfort and stability. A well-fitted denture reduces irritation and improves everyday wearability.
Affordable Tooth Replacement Option
Dentures are a cost-effective solution for replacing multiple missing teeth. They offer a reliable balance of function, aesthetics, and affordability compared to other treatments.
The Denture Process at Appin Dental Surgery
Getting dentures isn't a one-visit job. It's a process that takes a few appointments over several weeks, but we'll guide you through every stage.

We start by examining your mouth, gums, and any remaining teeth. X-rays or a 3D scan may be taken to assess your jawbone. We'll discuss your goals, explain your options (full, partial, implant-retained, immediate, flexible), and give you a clear treatment plan with costs upfront.
If teeth need to be extracted first, we'll plan that carefully. For patients needing immediate dentures, impressions are taken before extractions so your temporary set is ready on extraction day.
We take detailed moulds (impressions) of your upper and lower jaws. A bite registration records how your jaws align when you close. These measurements are critical for getting the fit, bite, and look right. They go to the lab where Francois and his team start fabricating your custom denture.
You will try a wax or acrylic mock-up of your dentures before the final version is made. This is your chance to check the tooth colour, shape, size, and positioning. We'll adjust anything that doesn't look or feel right. It's much easier to make changes at this stage than after the final denture is processed.
Your completed dentures are fitted and adjusted for comfort and function. We'll check your bite, make sure there are no sore spots, and confirm you're happy with the look. You'll leave wearing your new teeth.
New dentures almost always need a few tweaks in the first weeks. That's completely normal. We schedule follow-up visits to fine-tune the fit and address any pressure points or sore spots as you adjust. We also give you clear instructions on daily care, cleaning, and storage.
Caring For Your Dentures: Necessary Post-treatment Guidelines
Caring for your dentures properly is essential to ensure comfort, maintain function, and protect your oral health. At Appin Dental Surgery, we provide clear instructions and ongoing support to help you adjust with confidence.
Daily Cleaning
Remove your dentures after meals and rinse them under running water. Clean them at least once a day with a soft denture brush and non-abrasive denture cleanser (not regular toothpaste, which is too gritty and scratches the surface).
Overnight Storage
Take your dentures out at night to let your gums rest. Soak them in clean, cool water or a denture-soaking solution. Never use hot water because it can warp the acrylic and ruin the fit.
Eating with Dentures
Start with soft foods cut into small pieces. Chew on both sides of your mouth evenly to prevent the denture from tipping. As you get more comfortable (usually within a few weeks), you can gradually add firmer foods.
Speech Adjustment
You might notice slight changes to your speech at first, particularly with "s" and "f" sounds. This is temporary. Practice reading aloud or talking to yourself at home. Most patients adjust within a couple of weeks.
Relines and Repairs
Over time, your gums and jawbone change shape (a natural process called bone resorption). A hard reline reshapes the denture's inner surface to match your current gum contours. Soft relines use a flexible material and are helpful for patients with sore or tender gums. Budget for a reline every 1 to 2 years, and a full replacement every 5 to 10 years depending on wear.
Regular Check-Ups
Even if your dentures feel fine, keep up with regular dental visits (at least once a year). We'll check the fit, the health of your gums and any remaining natural teeth, and screen for oral issues like tissue irritation or early signs of oral cancer.

Health Fund and Payment Information
We are a preferred provider for both nib and Medibank, which means you'll typically receive higher rebates for your denture treatment. We also accept all other major Australian health funds.

HICAPS On-the-Spot Claims
No need to submit paperwork and wait for reimbursement. We process your health fund claim immediately using our HICAPS machine, so you only pay your gap on the day.
Denture Coverage Under Health Funds
Most private health funds cover dentures under major dental or general dental extras, depending on your policy level. Coverage amounts vary per year for prosthodontic services. Check with your fund or bring your card in and we will look up your benefit details for you.
Flexible Payment Plans
We offer Afterpay and Humm so you can split your denture costs into smaller, interest-free payments. Visit our patient resources page for more details on payment options.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dentures
Denture costs depend on the type you need and the materials used. In Australia, a single-arch full denture typically ranges from $1,100 to $2,200, while a full set (upper and lower) runs between $2,000 and $4,000.
Most dentures last between 5 and 10 years with proper care. Over time, your gums and jawbone naturally change shape, which affects how your dentures fit.
Well-made, properly fitted dentures should not cause ongoing pain. You'll feel some initial strangeness in the first week or two as your mouth adjusts, including increased saliva and minor soreness. These are normal and settle quickly.
Yes, but it takes a bit of practice. Start with soft foods for the first week or two, then gradually add firmer items.
Full (complete) dentures replace all teeth in an entire arch. Partial dentures fill specific gaps while your remaining healthy teeth stay in place. Partials use clasps or attachments to anchor onto your natural teeth.
We generally recommend removing them at night. Your gums need time to rest, and sleeping without dentures reduces your risk of gum irritation and fungal infections like oral thrush.
Yes. We're a registered OHFFSS provider with NSW Health. If you've received a Denture Voucher from your Local Health District, you can use it with us for the full denture process.
If your dentures are slipping, causing sore spots, or feel loose, a reline might be all you need. But if the teeth are worn down, the acrylic is cracked or stained beyond cleaning, or the denture is more than 7 to 10 years old, it's probably time for a new set.
